About Us

ourSchoolSt Mary’s Primary School is in the fortunate position of being surrounded by beautiful countryside whilst still enjoying very easy access from the surrounding villages. The grounds also house a small wildlife area and vegetable plot.

Whilst at St Mary’s, pupils have the opportunity to participate in many different educational visits to enhance their learning experiences. This present school year has seen classes visiting, Lancaster Dukes Theatre, Thorneyholme Forest School and Hothersall Lodge Residential Centre.

Sporting activities play an important part of life at St Mary’s! The children regularly compete in inter school competitions (football, tag rugby, multi skills etc) as well as taking part in curriculum sports. The children in Y2,3, 4 & 5 attend swimming lessons for a term. From time to time we have visiting coaches for tag rugby, football, cricket, tennis, dance and golf. We attend also attend Pendle ski centre on a weekly basis.

After school activities are rotated throughout the year: these include such things as drama, dance classes, gymnastics, gardening, fencing, cricket and football.

We enjoy entertaining our parents and friends, for example the youngest children may remind us of the Nativity events at Christmas and the older children may take part in a musical production.

We are an important part of St Mary’s Parish, and our Parish Priest, Canon Dorran comes in very regularly to see us.We encourage our children to share what they have with others: last year we raised money for the Air Ambulance, Macmillan and CAFOD.

Our parents’ association, The PTA of St Mary’s, runs lots of fund raising and fun events throughout the year. The money they have raised has made a big difference to our school.

Our History

theChurchabout

The church building was constructed in 1838, thanks to the generosity of Captain Heatley and the Hubbersty family, though local Catholics had worshipped in the area long before this time.

The Presbytery, stable and coach house (now the Parish Centre) were built at the same time. Our school was built a short time after the Church and consisted of a single room, which still exists as the Hall of the present school.
