Maths

At St Mary’s, our mathematics curriculum is based on the White Rose Maths scheme, which supports a progressive mastery approach to teaching and learning. White Rose provides engaging and carefully sequenced lessons that develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through practical exploration, discussion, reasoning and problem-solving opportunities. The curriculum covers all areas of the National Curriculum across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, including number, calculation, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, geometry and statistics.

At St Mary’s, we believe that all children can succeed in mathematics. Through the mastery approach, children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills whilst building confidence and resilience as mathematicians. Learning focuses on depth before breadth, ensuring children gain a secure understanding of key concepts before moving on. Lessons encourage collaboration, mathematical discussion and the use of precise vocabulary to help children explain and justify their thinking.

We are also proud to work alongside the Maths Hub to continually develop and strengthen our mathematics teaching, ensuring children receive high-quality mathematical experiences that inspire confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of mathematics.
