Parents must request permission before taking their child out of school during term time, as there is no automatic entitlement to leave. Absence will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances, and even then it may be refused, particularly during key periods such as SATs.
Taking time off in term time can negatively impact a child’s progress and attainment, disrupt their learning, and mean they miss valuable teaching time and social experiences that cannot be recovered. Regular school holidays provide appropriate opportunities for family time, and unauthorised absences may result in a penalty.
