MFL - Spanish

At St Mary’s, we believe that learning a modern foreign language opens doors, broadens horizons and helps children appreciate the rich diversity of God’s world. Spanish is taught across Key Stage 2 and provides pupils with exciting opportunities to communicate in another language while developing confidence, curiosity and respect for other cultures.

Our Spanish curriculum follows the Twinkl mixed‑age scheme, ensuring clear progression in vocabulary, grammar and language skills across all KS2 year groups. Lessons are interactive, engaging and practical, with a strong focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Children learn through songs, games, role‑play, conversation, reading simple texts and writing words and short sentences.

We aim for all pupils to develop accurate pronunciation, increasing fluency and the confidence to communicate in Spanish. Retrieval practice, visual prompts and vocabulary displays help children revisit and secure prior learning, while cultural activities introduce pupils to Spanish traditions, celebrations and daily life.

Spanish at St Mary’s is inclusive and accessible for all learners. Adaptive teaching, visual supports, repetition and scaffolded activities ensure every child can participate and make progress. Children are encouraged to embrace mistakes as part of the learning journey and to develop resilience and independence as language learners.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils leave St Mary’s with a strong foundation in Spanish, a positive attitude towards language learning and the skills they need to continue their studies confidently at secondary school.
