Our Curriculum

This half term, our learning is based on Clem and Crab, exploring the ocean, sea creatures, habitats, and the importance of caring for our environment and each other.

Reception

In Literacy, children will develop their communication and writing skills by orally retelling stories and writing for a purpose, such as composing letters to explain ideas and encourage positive actions.

In Phonics, children will develop their phonics knowledge by learning the digraphs ur, ow, oi, er and the trigraphs ear, air, ure. They will practise reading and spelling words containing these sounds, including longer and two-syllable words. Children will also learn and consolidate tricky words such as come, do, so, were, some, there, out and little, applying them in reading and writing.

In Maths, children will develop their understanding of numbers beyond 10 by building and recognising number patterns and practising counting beyond 20. They will explore early addition and subtraction by adding to and taking away from groups, and talking about how quantities change. They will also develop spatial awareness by selecting, manipulating, rotating, and combining shapes, as well as composing and decomposing them to create and describe arrangements.

In RE, children will learn about key Christian stories, including the Ascension and Pentecost, and explore the role of the Holy Spirit. They will also learn about church, prayer, and the importance of helping and caring for others.

Pre-School

In Literacy, children will develop early storytelling skills by sequencing images and using them to retell stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

In Phonics, children will develop their listening and sound awareness by describing and identifying environmental sounds using appropriate vocabulary. They will explore how sounds can represent ideas by selecting and playing instruments linked to images, stories, and rhymes, explaining their choices. They will also use their bodies to create sounds and begin to describe these using a growing range of vocabulary, including changes in speed and volume.

In Maths, children will develop pattern and early number awareness by exploring rhythm, movement, and simple patterns. They will begin to recognise, copy, and continue AB patterns, and talk about patterns in objects and arrangements. Through subitising activities, they will match and represent small quantities using sounds, fingers, and resources. They will also build counting skills to 5 through songs, rhymes, and practical experiences of adding and taking away.

Pre-Pre-School

In Literacy, children will develop early storytelling skills by sequencing images and using them to retell stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

In Phonics, children will develop their listening and participation skills by joining in with words and actions from familiar and new songs and rhymes. They will explore rhythm and expression by performing actions with changes in speed and volume.

In Maths, children will develop early counting skills by listening to number names, joining in, and practising saying them in order. They will learn to count forwards and backwards with support, and will begin to recognise and copy simple number sequences such as 1, 2, 3 through play.

Wider Curriculum

Children will explore the world through Geography, comparing different environments and cultures, and History, reflecting on their own experiences and the past. In Science, they will learn about a variety of animals and habitats, including an introduction to dinosaurs.

Creative subjects include Music, where children use songs and stories to explore rhythm and movement, and Art, where they will design and create animal sculptures using a range of materials.

In Computing, children will develop early sequencing skills through stories and games, while also learning how to stay safe online.
