Cedar Class 2

Welcome to Cedar Class

'Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it' Proverbs 22:6

"The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon"

Psalm 29:5

CEDAR CLASS P.E. WILL TAKE PLACE EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY.

Children need to bring their PE kits to school on these days please.

For any questions or queries, please email: parents@smrc.lancs.sch.uk

Jubilee Pledge Posters

This afternoon, we discussed as a class where the most effective places would be to put our posters. We went on a little mission around school together and put them up:

  • in bathrooms
  • in corridors
  • in classrooms
  • outside
  • in the notice board.

Can you spot your poster and tell your grown up where it is in school?

Remember, as a class we have pledged to help to look after God's world in this Jubilee Year, so lets try to do so every day.

English - Look Up!

We needed to look up in the night sky to see what we could see. As we can't do that in an English lesson in the middle of the day, we laid under our tables and looked up and (as if by magic) there were images of things you may see in the night sky, stuck to the underneath of everyone's desks!

After 'looking up at the night sky', we wrote sentences about what we could see, either using and to extend our sentences or using adjectives to describe what we could see.

Balancing in PE

Cedar Tree Drawing/Painting

We have looked in the Bible and found where Cedar trees are mentioned in the Bible.

Psalm 29:5:

"The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon."

We discussed the meaning of this passage not being literal but instead it is expressing how strong, powerful and important God is.

We then looked at some photos of Cedar trees and a branch from a real Cedar tree. We drew our own Cedar tree, mixed primary colours to make the correct shade of green and used forks to paint them. They will be going up on display in the hall so keep an eye out for your child's painting next time you're in school!

Jubilee Pledge Afternoon

Cedar Class have pledged in this Jubilee year, to look after God's world. We have learnt about the letter that Pope Francis wrote to the world titled Laudato Si.

We have made posters to encourage everyone at St Mary's to look after our world.

Also, we went litter picking around our school grounds. Could you go litter picking with your family too?

National Fitness Day

Today is National Fitness Day. We have taken part in a fun pirate fitness lesson and learnt all about the importance of staying fit and healthy. Challenged yourself to have a go at the new Joe Wicks Animated fitness video that is linked below at home as a family!

PE

Art

Maths

We explored our new Maths boxes and had a chance to play and build with our equipment today! From now on though, we'll only use this equipment to support our learning in Maths. We'll just use the lego to make amazing creations from now on!

Look Up!

Our text for English this half term is titled Look Up. So, it only seemed right that we started off by actually looking up! We decided to go around school and describe what we could see when we looked up, then we wrote about we had seen.

We made our faces into jigsaws!

Computing - Beebots

Class 2 have enjoyed the beginning of our new computing unit today. We have learnt how to use Beebots safely. Then, we explored the functions of the buttons on a Beebot and learned that these give a command to the Beebot to tell it what we want it to do.

Parishioners' Tea Party

Class 1 and Class 2 were invited to sing at the Parishioners' tea party today. They sang a selection of songs from our upcoming Nativity and represented St Mary's brilliantly, well done!

Geography

Messy Maps

We had a lot of fun making 3d maps of our classroom this week. We started with a plan of the classroom with just the doors and windows drawn on and we had to choose classroom objects to represent different features of the room.

Road Safety Week

This week is Road Safety Week. Class 2 have made a video full of very important road safety messages for you. Unfortunately, this video is too big a file to upload to the website. Please visit our school facebook page to find the video. Your child is also bringing home a road safety postcard to share with you as well.

Parliament Week

This week is Parliament Week. In Class 2 we have learnt all about: Parliament, the House of Commons, the House of Lords and about some of the laws that have been passed in Parliament. Then, we re-designed the Parliament Week logo!

Eggsperiment

We tested the strength of eggshells by measuring how many millilitres of water 3, 4, then 5 eggshells could withstand before they cracked.

We had a lot of fun and we learnt that the dome shape of an eggshell is VERY strong. This is why buildings/bridges often use dome shapes to support them.

A visit from Lancashire Fire Service

Today we learnt that if we are ever unfortunate enough to be in a fire we should "Stop, drop and roll". We also learnt about smoke alarms and were set the task of making a fire plan at home with our grown ups.

The children were impeccably behaved, well done Class 2!

Skipton Castle Trip

We had a brilliant time at Skipton Castle. It was incredible to see all of the defensive features which we had learnt about in class, for real life in front of eyes! We couldn't believe how big the castle was and we loved seeing the arrow slits. Without a doubt though, our favourite part was seeing the toilet... ask your child where the contents from the toilet lands!

All of the children represented St Mary's impeccably today.

Our Father

We have been learning all about the Our Father in RE and the meaning of each section. We made prayer mobiles in RE yesterday and used them to say the Our Father as a class. Ask your child to use their prayer mobile to say the Our Father at home.

PE - Outdoor Adventure Activities

We have loved our first PE unit! We've learnt the compass points: North, South, East and West and used these to follow the directions to find the pirate treasure. Everyone demonstrated great teamwork skills, well done Class 2.

Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome back to all of our families after what I hope has been a fun filled summer holidays for you all. I am really looking forward to hearing all about the memories they have made with you.

In English we will be starting the half-term by basing our writing on the book 'Fergal is Fuming'. They will be writing a character description of Fergal and also writing instructions.  After this, they will be using the book ‘Bold Women in Black History’ which is a non-fiction text and our writing unit will lead up to children writing a biography.

In Maths We are now following White Rose Maths and our first unit of work is on place value. After that we will move onto Addition and Subtraction.

In Science we will be learning about everyday materials. Children will investigate which materials can be changed if they are squashed/twisted etc and they will then move onto comparing the properties of materials. We will finish our unit by comparing the properties of materials to their uses.

In R.E. we will be learning about the story of Creation from the book of Genesis. They will learn that we were created to take care of God's world and this will lead us into learning about Laudato Si.

In P.E. we will start the term with an Outdoor Adventures unit which has a huge focus on teambuilding. This will be a lovely start to the year as it will allow our new class to gel and bond together. We will then move on to Football later this half term.

In History the children will be learning all about castles with a focus on Skipton Castle and the conflict and invasion at Skipton Castle. They will learn how castles are designed for conflict and what daily life would have been like at a castle.

In Computing the children will be completing their first unit of work on online safety. This is of paramount importance as so many children have access to technology and the internet.
